Fireworks!!

Més enllà de les discrepàncies i el seu distanciament, la realitat és que tant Gulda com Schiff han deixat petjada en el seu pas per la música de l'últim segle. Recordo l'única ocasió en que he pogut escoltar a Heinrich Schiff en directe. Va ser a la Kronberg Academy. El tenia davant, a un metre, en un petit escenari oferint un recital amb piano. De totes les bèsties que aquell cap de setmana s'havien citat a la ciutat dormitori de Kronberg, cap va arribar a desafinar i brutejar més. Tot i així, mai, ni en aquella fita en què vaig poder escoltar tots els grans, he sentit un talent tant exuberant i descarat amb el cello. És una explosió, un castell de focs d'artifici! De Gulda en parlarem en una altra ocasió... aquest any, al festival, tenim preparada una petita sorpresa relacionada amb el pianista austríac. De moment, us deixo un vídeo que tracta el distanciament d'ambdós músics, però en el que, amb el primer minut i mig, entendreu què vull dir amb focs d'artifici.

Beyond their disagreement and their distancing, the truth is that both, Gulda and Schiff, have left their mark on the music of this last century. I remember the only occasion that I did it to listen to Schiff live. It was in the Kronberg Academy. He was just seating in front of me, giving a cello and piano recital. Among all the monsters that met at Kronberg that week, none played as dirty as he did. Even then, never, nor in that occasion listening to the greatest cellists, I've heard such an exuberant and brazen talent. He's an explosion, a firework display! We'll talk about Gulda in another occasion... we have a little surprise related to the Austrian pianist this year at the festival. By the moment, I post a video that talks about the distancing between the two musicians, but in which, in one and a half minute, you'll understand what I mean by fireworks.

El 20 d’agost serà el dia i l’església de sant Llorenç de Morunys serà el lloc on s’escoltarà per primera vegada The seeds of time. Un sextet de corda que AIMS, seguint amb el compromís amb la creació que varem adquirir l’any passat, ha encarregat en aquesta ocasió a Luis Codera Puzo, un jove compositor català amb molta projecció que després de realitzar els estudis superiors de composició amb Agustí Charles a l’ESMUC i al Conservatori Superior de Música de Saragossa (CSMZ), a més a més ha rebut classes de Kaija Saariaho, Lasse Thoressen i J. M. Sánchez-Verdú i ha assistint a conferències i seminaris d’Héctor Parra, Louis Andriessen i Magnus Lindberg. Actualment estudia un postgrau de composició amb Wolfgang Rihm a la Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.
Les seves obres, han estat estrenades a diverses ciutats espanyoles i alemanyes a cicles de concerts com el de “Joves Intèrprets Catalans” (JIC), el II Cicle de Música Contemporània “Frederic Mompou”, el festival de Música Contemporània “Nou Sons” de Barcelona o el cicle “Nacht Klang”, interpretades per grups com el “Minguet Quartet”, o els “BCN216”.
Aquí teniu un exemple del treball compositiu de Luis Codera, que de ben segur situarà a l’AIMS Festival en la més absoluta i rabiosa contemporaneïtat.

August 20th is the day and Sant Llorenç de Morunys’ church is the place where "The seeds of time" will be listened for the firs time ever. A string sextet that AIMS, following with his commitment with the creation that got started last year, have commissioned to Luis Codera Puzo, a young, but very active and internationaly konwn Catalan composer, who after studying composition with Agustí Charles in the ESMUC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya) and in CSMZ (Conservatorio Superior de Música de Zaragoza), also took classes with Kaija Saariaho, Lasse Thoressen and J. M. Sánchez-Verdú, and participated in seminars of Héctor Parra, Louis Andriessen and Magnus Lindberg. Nowadays he is studying a master degree in composition with Wolfgang Rihm in the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.
His compositions had its premiers in different Spanish and German cities in series and festivals such as “Joves Intèrprets Catalans” (JIC), or II Cicle de Música Contemporània “Frederic Mompou”, the Contemporary Music Festival of Barcelona “Nou Sons” or “Nacht Klang”, and have been played by groups like “Minguet Quartet”, or “BCN216” a.o.
Here you have a taste of the compositive work of Luis Codera, who will surely place next AIMS Festival in the very latest contemporary.

Un dels encontres musicals més impactants que he tingut aquest últim any ha estat amb Gustavo Dudamel... Veure'l conduir la seva orquestra veneçolana, amb més de 150 músics a sobre l'escenari és un espectacle garantit. El seu gest és pràcticament hipnòtic. No sabria massa bé com descriure-ho, però el fet és que acabes fent que si amb el cap cada vegada que et dona una entrada... com si haguessis d'atacar la corda, com si fossis un músic més de l'orquestra. Val la pena descobrir el personatge. Avui us deixo un vídeo del prodigi Dudamel dirigint la Berliner Philharmoniker. Si us hi fixeu bé veureu el nostre profe de viola Ulrich Knörzer. Quan arribi a Solsona li preguntarem si l'hipnotisme era generalitzat o només li passa al públic...

One of the most stunning musical meetings I had this last year was with Gustavo Dudamel... Watching him driving his Venezuelan Orchestra, with more than 150 musicians onstage is a great show. His gesture is practically hypnotic. I wouldn't know exactly how to descreibe it, but the thing is that you finish by nodding with your head every time he gives you a new entrance... as if you would attack the string, as if you where one of the orchestra's musicians. It's worth to discover this important figure. Today I post a video of the wonder Dudamel conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker. If you look carefully you'll find our viola teacher Ulrich Knörzer. In Solsona we'll ask him if this hypnotism is general or if it only happens to the audience...

Continuant amb el fil de les veus indiscutibles, us deixo un vídeo de la gran Jessy Norman. Per aquells pocs que encara no la coneixíeu, potser us farà gràcia saber que te el sobrenom de "Just Enormous", per la grandesa de la seva veu. En aquest video canta, per mi, una de les melodies més boniques que mai s'han escrit. Tal vegada la versió no sigui prou fidel als criteris històrics amb que actualment s'acostuma a interpretà Purcell... però com en pot arribar a ser d'increïble la naturalesa humana!, no? Ploreu sense complexes. Ploreu com ho hem fet en algun dels concerts del festival.

To continue with the guiding thread of the indisputable voices, I post a video of the great Jessy Norman. For those few who steal didn't know her, maybe you'd like to know that she's also called "Just Enormous", because of her incredible voice. In this video she's singing, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful melodies that have ever been written. Maybe the version is not enough accurate to nowadays historical way of playing Purcell's music... but how incredible can reach to be the human nature!, don't you think? Cry without complex. Cry as we did in some concerts of the festival.

Hi ha moments memorables a les classes magistrals. El nerviosisme de l'alumne, l'admiració dels presents i la mirada aterridora del professor... la classe d'avui es centra en l'staccato. Un jove Chou Lian Lin toca sota l'atenta mirada d'un dels grans mites del violí dels últims temps, Itzhak Perlman. El violinista israelià ens parla d'una anècdota amb Ysaÿe... havíeu vist mai un staccato com aquest? Per cert, una curiositat: una de les nostres ex alumnes, Anny Chen, ha estat acceptada al Perlman Music Program. Des d'aquí volem felicitar-la i desitjar-li molts més èxits!

There are memorable moments taking place in master classes. The nerves of the student, the admiration of the audience and the terrifying look of the teacher... today's lesson is based on the staccato. A very young Chou Lian Lin plays under the attentive look of one of the big violin myths of last times, Itzhak Perlman. The Israeli violinist tells us a story about Ysaÿe... did you ever see a staccato like that? By the way, just for curiosity: one of our ex students, Anny Chen, has been accepted in the Perlman Music Program. We congratulate her and wish her lots of success!

Tant sols us deixo anar tres noms: Sandrine Piau, Bernarda Fink i Berliner Barock Solisten. El vídeo parla per si sol... les dues veus, indiscutibles referents del món de la música antiga, i la formació nascuda al cor de la Berliner Philharmoniker, semblen donar sentit a allò que us comentava en un post anterior (Modern Times)... quina música més viva, més actual!! Entre els músics hi podeu descobrir un dels nostres professors, Ulrich Knörzer, impulsor de la formació Concerto Melante, una extensió de la Berliner Barock Solisten.

I'll only tell you three different names: Sandrine Piau, Bernarda Fink and Berliner Barock Solisten. The video speaks for itself... the two voices, indisputable references of the ancient music world, and the ensemble born in the heart of the Berliner Philharmoniker, seem to give sense to what I was talking about in a past post (Modern Times)... such a lively and present music!! Among the musicians you can find one of our teachers, Ulrich Knörzer, promoter of the ensemble Concerto Melante, an extension of the Berliner Barock Solisten.

Avui us deixo unes imatges del MONSTRE GERGIEV. El genial director és titular de la LSO, orquestra on exerceix de violí solista el nostre professor Evgueni Grach. Veure dirigir al monstre fa posar la pell de gallina... Algú de vosaltres l'ha pogut veure en directe? Imagineu-vos com ha de ser poder treballar amb ell; tenir-lo cara a cara cada dia. Us deixo un vídeo en el que Gergiev ens parla de la interpretació de Mahler amb la LSO, i ens deixa entreveure la seva passió pel compositor. Tal vegada vagi errat, i en realitat el MONSTRE viu amb passió tot el que li cau a les mans. Però per si de cas, us convido a veure també el vídeo de Romeo i Julieta de Prokófiev que trobareu al canal youtube de la LSO. BESTIAL!

Today I post for you some images of the MONSTER GERGIEV. The brilliant musician is the Principal Conductor of the LSO, orchestra where our violin teacher Evgueni Grach is playing as principal violinist. To see the monster conducting makes you goose bumps... Could any of you see him live? Imagine how must it be to work with him; to be face to face every day. I post a video in which Gergiev talks about performing Mahler with the LSO, and let us discover his passion for the composer. Maybe I'm just wrong, and the MONSTER lives with passion everything he does. As I already announced in my last post, the Inaugural Concert of the AIMS Festival, with the FINE ARTS QUARTET together with the pianist Seon-hee Myong, has been selected for the "2010 Euroradio Summer Festival". Today I post for you a video of Ralph Evans, the first violin of the mythical quartet. Did you know that he was winner in 1982 of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow?

El Concert Inaugural d'AIMS ha estat seleccionat per al "2010 Euroradio Summer Festival"! Això significa que el concert serà retransmès en directe per totes les emissores de la UER (Unió Europea de Radiodifusió). Cal tenir en compte que el concert ha estat escollit entre diferents propostes de Catalunya Ràdio entre els festivals d'estiu més potents de Catalunya! Al concert hi podrem escoltar el mític quartet de corda FINE ARTS QUARTET, que enguany entra a formar part del claustre de professors, juntament amb la professors de piano de l'Acadèmia Seon-hee Myong. La feina ben feta va donant els seus resultats!! Ara si que ja no us el podreu perdre... per molt lluny que estigueu... AIMS a Europa!! Anirem actualitzant la notícia a mesura que en sapiguem més detalls. De moment us deixo un vídeo d'un assaig del quartet... aneu fent boca.

The Inaugural Concert of AIMS has been selected for the "2010 Euroradio Summer Festival"! This means that the concert will be live broadcasted in all the radio stations of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). Take into account that the concert has been selected among different proposals that the Catalan Radio made of the most successful summer festivals in Catalonia! In the concert we'll listen to the mythical FINE ARTS QUARTET, this year becoming part of the AIMS teacher's staff, together with the piano teacher of the Academy Seon-hee Myong. The job well done is giving its results!! Now there's no excuse to miss it... no matter how far you are... AIMS in Europe!! We'll update the news related to this great concert in further posts. By the moment, I post for you a video of a rehearsal of the quartet... just to taste.

Alexander Anissimov, el director que enguany es farà càrrec de l'Orquestra d'AIMS, dirigeix l'OBC al Liceu (26 i 29 de juny). Interpretaran "El Jug ador" de Serguei Prokófiev, obra basada en la novel·la de Dostoievski. Justament ahir, a L'Auditori, conversava amb un dels músics de l'Orquestra, i em comentava com n'estaven d'il·lusionats amb el projecte. L'obra, el director i l'escenari inusual per l'OBC, fa que ho esperin amb impaciència. Anireu a escoltar-lo, o esperareu a Solsona??

Alexander Anissimov, the conductor who'll take care this year of the AIMS Orchestra, will be conducting the OBC (Natoional Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona and Catalonia) in the Liceu (Barcelona Opera House) (26th and 29th of June). They'll play "The Player" of Serguei Prokofiev, a pice based on Dostoievski's book. Just yesterday, in L'Auditori (Barcelona's Main Concert Hall) I was talking to one of the orchestra musicians, and he told me how they where excited about this project. The piece, the conductor, and the unusual stage for the OBC, is the reason of they're impatience. Are you going to listen to it or you'll just wait for Solsona?

No hi ha dubte que la nostra és una acadèmia dirigida principalment a instrumentistes moderns. Generalment, quan parlem d'instruments moderns, ho fem en contraposició a aquells que són antics, però sens dubte existeix una lectura més subjectiva del concepte. En paraules de Jan Van den Bossche, fins fa dos anys director de l'Oudemuziek d'Utrecht i actual director del Festival de Música Antiga de Barcelona, "l'antiga és la música més moderna". En aquest cas es referia al concepte de modernitat com a qualificatiu de quelcom que és propi dels temps presents. Alguns dels nostres professors han demostrat un interès creixent per la música que anomenem "antiga". Dos dels exemples en són Roel Dieltens, violoncel·lista creador de l'Ensemble Explorations, i Ulrich Knörzer, un dels impulsors de Concerto Melante, formació de música antiga nascuda de la Berliner Philharmoniker. M'encanten els músics polifacètics!

Definitely, our academy is mainly addressed to modern instrumentalists. Generally, when we talk about modern instruments, we do it in comparison to those considered ancient, but undoubtedly we could find a more subjective lecture of the concept. Jan Van den Bossche, till two years ago the director of the Oudemuziek Festival and currently director of the Barcelona Ancient Music Festival, said: "the ancient is the most modern music". In this case he was referring to the concept of modernity like the qualifying of something which belongs to the present times. Some of our teachers have been also interested in that music we call "ancient". Two of them are Roel Dieltiens, cellist and creator of the Ensemble Explorations, and Ulrich Knörzer, one of the promoters of Concerto Melante, a group of ancient music born in the heart of the Berliner Philharmoniker. I love versatile musicians!

Una imatge val més que mil paraules... el nostre director acadèmic i professor de violoncel, Peter Thiemann, torna a ser en territoris ocupats. En la seva labor docent-humanitària dins la Fundació Barenboim-Said, en Peter passa gairebé la meitat de l'any a Palestina. Aquesta setmana ha emprés novament un viatge cap a l'orient, on hi conviurà i treballarà durant un mes i mig. La West-Eastern Devan és la nineta dels ulls del totpoderós Daniel, però la Fundació també duu a terme altres projectes descarats. Coneixeu la seva labor a Ramallah?

A picture is worth a thousand words... our academic director and cello teacher, Peter Thiemann, is again in the occupied territories. In his pedagogical-humanitarian work with the Barenboim-Said Foundation, Peter stays almost half of the year in Palestine. This week he has started again a trip to the orient, where he'll live together and work for a month and a half. The West-Eastern Devan is the apple of all-powerful David's eyes, but the Foundation is also carrying out other brazen projects. Do you know what they're doing in Ramallah?

Sempre hem sentit parlar de la qualitat del so dels russos... que alguna cosa el feia diferent. Avui us convido a escoltar atentament qualsevol de les tres primeres peces que podeu trobar al nostre myspace (quartets amb piano de Brahms o Mozart). Estic parlant de l’Andriy Viytovych i l’Evgueni Grach, professors de viola i violí d’AIMS. Comptant aquesta edició, ja en fa set que estan amb nosaltres, i us puc assegurar que encara sento alguna cosa a l’estómac cada cop que els torno a escoltar. Pell de gallina?

We’ve always heard about the Russian’s sound quality... that somehow, something made it different. Today I invite you to hear carefully any of the three first peaces you find in our myspace (Brahms or Mozart piano quartets). I’m talking about Andriy Viytovych and Evgueni Grach, both viola and violin teachers of AIMS. Since now they’ve been around seven years with us, and I can tell you I steal feel something in my stomach every time I hear them again… Goose bumps?

Aquest passat divendres vam poder compartir micròfon amb en Ramon Segués del programa "Si vols" de Solsona fm. Des d'aquí volem agrair-los l'oportunitat i la bona estona que vam passar. En Joan, i jo mateix (Robert), vam quedar gratament sorpresos de la seva professionalitat i originalitat. I, per què no dir-ho, ens van afalagar l'orgull i l'admiració amb que els solsonins i solsonines viuen les activitats de l'Acadèmia. Recordeu León Spierer? Durant la història recent d'AIMS ja hem pogut compartir l'experiència d'un músic de la Berliner Philharmoniker. El violinista argentí va ser concertino de la que molts consideren millor orquestra del món durant 30 anys (1963-1993), en gran part, sota la batuta del mestre Karajan. En aquesta nova edició d'AIMS tornem a tenir la sort de compartir faristol amb un músic de la prestigiosa simfònica: Ulrich Knörzer. Pocs músics poden presumir d'haver estat tres anys guanyadors de la Competició Nacional Alemanya "Jugend musiziert". El jove Knörzer ja apuntava maneres!! En aquesta ocasió, a més, resulta que el músic de la filharmònica és també professor de la prestigiosa UDK. Què més podem desitjar?

Do you remember León Spierer? During the AIMS history we could already shear the experience of a Berliner Philharmoniker musician. The Argentinean violinist was the concertmaster of that orchestra frequently considered like the best of the world, during 30 years (1963-1993), mostly under Karajan, the mythical conductor. In this new AIMS edition we are lucky again to share stand with a musician of the prestigious symphonic: Ulrich Knörzer. Few musicians could tell to have been three times winners of the German National Competition "Jugend musiziert". The young Knörzer was already promising!! Besides, in this occasion, not only he is musician from the Berliner, but he's also teacher at the prestigious UDK. What else could we ask for?

Quan un sent parlar de l'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande ràpidament ho relaciona amb un estàndard de qualitat... si a més, de sobte, li parlen de la International Menuhin Music Academy, la curiositat comença a transformar-se en neguit. Diuen que les oportunitats cal aprofitar-les quan venen. Quan configuràvem el claustre de professors de l'AIMS, i ens va sorgir la possibilitat de convidar el concertino de la mítica orquestra helvètica, que a més era professor de la prestigiosa acadèmia Menuhin, no vam poder-ho deixar escapar.
Avui us deixo un vídeo d'en Bogdan. El violinista rumanès ha enregistrat les partites i sonates per a violí sol del mestre de Leipzig, en un doble CD comemoratiu del 30è aniversari de l'Acadèmia Menuhin. Aquest enregistrament vídeo que us deixo deuria ser un bis, però n'hi ha prou per accentuar el nostre neguit... no podem esperar a l'agost per sentir-looo!

When you hear talking about the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande you quickly relate it to a quality standard... if then, suddenly you hear the name of the International Menuhin Music Academy, the curiosity turns to anxiety. It's said that you have to take the opportunities as they come. When we where looking for the teachers staff and got the opportunity to invite the concertmaster of the mythical Swiss orchestra, who also was professor of the prestigious Menuhin Academy, we couldn't pass it up.
Today I post for you a video with Bogdan. The Rumanian violinist has recorded the partitas and sonatas of the master of Leipzig, in a double CD celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Menuhin Academy. This video may be an encore, but it's enough to stress our anxiety... we can't wait till August to listen to his playing!!

Aquí va el primer post de la setmana!

Suposo que molts ja sabeu que aquest any una de les grans novetats de l’acadèmia és la incorporació al claustre de professors del mític quartet de corda FINE ARTS QUARTET. Però pot ser no sabíeu que el Fine Arts es va fundar a Chicago l’any 1946, amb la qual cosa s’ha convertit en una de les poques formacions de cambra que han aconseguit girar arreu del món durant més de mig segle. Dels integrants actuals d’aquesta institució, tres han estat tocant junts durant 25 anys. Han dut a terme més de 200 enregistraments rebent importants distincions. Algunes de les més recents han estat el "Editor's Choice" del Gramophone Magazine (February, 2010) o el "BBC Music Magazine Choice" del 2008.

Us deixo un enregistrament amb els també mítics BORODIN QUARTET, interpretant l’Octet de Mendelssohn.

Voilà, the first post of the week!

I suppose that most of you already know that one of the great news of this year is the incorporation of the mythical FINE ARTS QUARTET at the teacher's staff. But maybe you didn't know that the Fine Arts was born in Chicago on 1946, becoming one of the very few chamber music ensembles that has been touring around the world over half a century. Three of the actual musicians have been playing together during 25 years. They've done more than 200 recordings reaching important distinctions. Some of the most recent have been the "Editor's Choice" of the Gramophone Magazine (February, 2010) or the "BBC Music Magazine Choice" del 2008.

Here you can listen to an incredible recording with the also mythical BORODIN QUARTET, playing the Mendelssohn Octet.
